The Power of Local Politics: An Eye-Opening Interview with Representative Contreras

Image
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Arizona State Representative Patrica Contreras. Representative Contreras is part of the democratic party and represents Legislative District 12, which covers Ahwatukee/Phoenix, south Tempe, and west Chandler (Patty Contreras for AZ House of Representatives, n.d). Below is a summary of our discussion.  “Yes, our district is important, but the whole state is also important.”   https://www.azleg.gov/house-member/?legislature=56&session=127&legislator=2157 Background and Role  The interview began with me asking about Representative Contreras journey to becoming a state representative and asking what inspired her to run for office. Representative Contreras explained that she is in her second term after being re-elected in November 2024, and having an interest in the government and fighting for people’s rights is something that she has always had. She continued by explaining that when she was younger, if she came across an i...

AI in Pediatric Mental Health: Innovating Care for a New Generation

https://techarticle.co.in/2024/05/generative-ai-redefining-possibilities-in-digital-innovation.html This week, I tried a different approach to exploring health policy; I used generative AI to create a blog post:  Mental Health in Pediatrics: Current Policy and Opportunities for Innovation in Arizona Mental health in pediatric populations is an increasingly critical concern, and Arizona is no exception. Across the United States, mental health disorders among children and adolescents have become more prevalent, with rates rising steadily over the past decades. Arizona, like many other states, is grappling with the challenge of addressing mental health needs in its pediatric population. The existing policies, while helpful, leave room for growth and innovation, especially in terms of incorporating research and evidence-based practices. Existing Policy Landscape in Arizona In Arizona, the mental health policies affecting pediatric populations primarily revolve around access to care, me...

Breaking Down Arizona’s Pediatric Mental Health System: Key Laws and Regulations You Need to Know

Image
Arizona's standard of care for pediatric mental health has been put in place by a series of statutory and regulatory mechanisms. These statutory laws and regulatory mechanisms ensure the protection, rights, and treatment of youth with mental health disorders. To continue to advocate for the mental health of Arizona's children and teens, it is important to have a thorough understanding of these mechanisms.  REGULATORY MECHANISMS  Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) Founded in 1982, AHCCS is Arizona’s Medicaid program, funded by the federal and state governments for individuals and families who qualify based on their income (AHCCCS, 2025).  AHCCCS plays a key role in providing funding and oversight for mental health services, administers behavioral health services for qualifying individuals, and ensures that these services are provided according to state and federal law.  The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) ADHS promotes and protects the h...

Rallying for Youth Mental Health: The Crucial Roles of Key Stakeholders

Image
https://kffhealthnews.org/news/cdc-takes-a-closer-look-at-kids-mental-health/ Nationwide mental health in adolescents and children is a topic that continues to garner more attention. As suicide is the leading cause of death among youth aged 12 to 18 years, there continue to be more efforts placed towards mental health promotion (Lindow et al., 2020). To make a difference in this issue, attention must be focused on various stakeholders. The inner circle of stakeholders would include caregivers and family members of the adolescents. This inner circle is crucial to mental health in youth as they have the potential to provide emotional and financial support. Additionally, these stakeholders play a key role in the early detection of issues and advocacy for further resources needed outside the ones they can provide. With this in mind, some consideration should be given when shifting focus from child mental health to family mental health (Biel et al., 2020). Apart from their home, children an...

Why Pediatric Mental Health in Arizona Deserves Our Attention

Mental health is a topic that continues to be of persistent attention worldwide, but it is still a prevalent issue worldwide. In the United States in 2017, 7.4% of adolescents self-reported that they had a suicide attempt in the previous year, and 2.4% of adolescents needed medical attention for attempted suicide (Lindow et al., 2020). Children and adolescents are at particular risk of developing mental health issues; in fact, an estimated one in eight young people have a mental disorder (Hards et al., 2022). When assessing aspects of mental health and overall well-being of children and teens in Arizona, it is critical to focus on areas related to self-harm, suicide considerations, plans, and attempts. While Arizona saw an 8% drop in self-reported suicide attempts between 2017 and 2021, there were significant increases in the adolescent-reported rates of self-harm, suicide ideation, and creation of suicide plans (AZDHS, 2024). According to the Arizona Department of H...
